Good Links: 7 guidelines how to improve usability

How you write and design your links is crucial to your visitors clicking them or not. Write them badly and they leave, write them well and they stay. Who knows, they might even do exactly that what you created your site for. Following are 7 guidelines how links should be written to improve the usability of your site.
Do it consistently
Visitors learn for example how a website marks the links or where the "related-content box" can be found. Consistently adhering to these established "codes" will make it easy to navigate and read the site.
Breaking these conventions will interrupt the flow. Such distractions might be enough for the user to leave. When creating a site it is important to define all the conventions and rules that are used. Consistently following them is essential for giving the user an easy time when visiting.
Don't mislead the visitor
Although links can look however the screen-designer decides, certain standards have developed and find widespread use. Underlining a text for example is a common indicator.
It is good practice not to underline text, marking it blue or putting an arrow in front, if is not a link. Visitors might construe them to be clickable.
The same applies to images. Many users will try to click on a graphic or any other image. Very rarely, they will find an active link - a tiny, but nevertheless negative experience. Captions have proven to be effective to add that little bit of content that users need in order not to click on an image. And if a link is present, it can be placed in the caption itself.
Show used links
Marking which links have been visited is very valuable. It helps to quickly "tick off" when going through a site or helps in finding this piece of information from a previous visit. Unfortunately, a great many sites do not use this very basic feature.
If the "visited" feature should also extend to the navigation is debatable. On very deep sites it might be useful. On the other hand it might confuse the visitor. The navigation should be a constant and change only minimally.
Match the destination with the link
Clicking on a link can be compared to following road signs in a city never visited before - you are very happy if you get confirmation that the choice you just made was the one intended.
Same thing applies to links - if a link reads "find out more about our services" the page that it relates to should show the words "Our Services" somewhere prominently in the title. It confirms the action taken.
Well written titles indicate clearly what the main topic is on the page. This is very useful, especially considering that a lot of traffic directly dives deep into the page.
Embedded links used to their full advantage
Links are visually different than the surrounding text. Color, a markup or other cues denote a link. Something maybe even happens before you click - mouse-over effects or an overlay, displaying the title.
Everything is designed to draw your eyes away from the surrounding text. If you embed links within a sentence, readers will very likely notice the link first and only later read your content. On first thought that is unfortunate, but it can be turned into an advantage.
Since reading online involves lots of scanning, the eye is always looking for visual cues. They can be provided by using subtitles or in this case descriptive links. By creating a meaningful link, finding the relevant information on a page is made easier. "Click here" is less effective then "View a list of articles about usability".
How to link to files
When linking to a file it is likely that another application is opened and that the visitor is drawn away from the site. Not something that should be done lightly.
A great many times websites link to related documents, very often PDF files. What exactly can be found in the file, the visitor needs to figure out from the link itself. The first step in creating a good link to a document is to summarize the content. That gives the visitor information how he wants to proceed.
The second step is more basic by asking why the document cannot be created as a webpage. If it is worth to be put onto the site, it surely is worth the effort to make if searchable, fully integrated and less work for the visitor. Using for instance PDF-files can make sense. Very often however, it is simply easier for the developer to put it onto the site - but not easier for the visitor to use it.
Mark the external links
An internal link refers to a page or file within the current domain, an external link usually points to a site, housed on a remote domain.
Although technically there is no difference in how the code for the links is written, it is common usage, even a w3.org recommendation, to inform the user if an external site is accessed by a link.
The rationale behind this is not to confuse the visitor who is getting used to the layout, navigation and architecture of a particular site. An external link can either be declared by stating it in the text, by a specific icon (like for instance Wikipedia does) or even by using the "title" tag of a link.
Whether the new site is opened in a new browser-window or replaces the current content could depend on the kind of information the visitor will find. It could be argued that sites with related content or sites who delve further into a topic might best be opened in a new window. The visitor can more easily relate back to the original site. In that case not only the external link, but maybe also the fact of a new window opening should be placed with the link.
Creating good links is vital for creating a good site. A link for instance is the only possibility an e-shop has to have users put products into the shopping basket. If that link should be badly written or confusingly placed, many users would give up before buying. That would be like not accepting money from a client standing right in front of you.

Using "Title Tags" for your web links & images is an arsenal many companies fail to utilize. These tags will help search engines to navigate through your information.
In the last topic we talked about Meta Tags within your web site source code. We also discussed how important it is to use the same words in your content that you included within your meta tags.
Another tip for your to complete your web page optimization is to include title tags for your relevant images.
Title Tags For Your Images:
It's well known that more and more people are now searching "Goggles Image Search Engine" People love to find images, why not help them find the images related to your business?
Let's say you sell cars, wouldn't it be nice to have all your cars listed online found within that "Goggles Image Search Engine"? This feature will allow more people to find your web site.
Tip #1 When Utilizing Titles On Your Images:
Creating titles or utilizing the "Alt" command as we say will let a search engine know what the image is about.
Like mentioned before, search engines are nothing more than robots going through your web site. They don't stop to look at your images, they only see the code.
Providing a title or Alt command for your image will allow the search engine to know what the image is all about which will increase your web sites content relevancy.
Tip #2 When Considering Image Links:
When using an image for a web link to another page, give your image a name that is meaning full to your service or product.
Ex. Well use this image below that will link to this page!
Using Title Tags
1. I've linked the image button to this page called "Using Title Tags"
2. I've named the image button "using_title_tags.gif"
3. The title of the image is: "Using Title Tags"
All of these steps will let the search engines know exactly what the image is about! Yes, I agree all these steps seem like a lot of work but in the end, when your sales are up, you won't be thinking about how much work it took but how successful you have become.
Notice how all these steps have given 3 "Key Phrases" for search engines to look at to determine the meaning of the image.
1. ( a href= ) - The web link command to another page
2. ( img src= ) - Where to find the image and what it's called
3. ( alt= ) - The title of the image
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's recap what you've learned so far...
- Search Engines are robots that look for "Meta Tags" & "Web Page Content"
- Meta Tags include: 1) Title, 2) Description, 3) Keywords
- Make sure your Meta Tags describe your web page content
- Add a relevant Title to your web links
- Add a relevant "Alt Title" to your images for more visitors

SEO experts are constantly telling us about the importance of good quality content and good quality back links from web sites with relevant content. They also tell us that reciprocal links and page rank are of decreasing importance. They then instruct us as to how to go about getting good links by personally contacting other web sites and proposing a reciprocal link! Confusing! As is much of the advice given to prospective site designers.
· Content is the key. Lots of it, with constant up dates to it, and it should be well written and informative not just a sales pitch.
· The more pages you can create the better. Upwards of 100 pages will highlight your site as an important one. Sites with only a few pages rarely appear on the first page of search engine results.
· As the site ages its importance will increase. Those who got in early generally outperform the later sites. Google also have an ageing process for links. As these links approach six months old they become of more importance.
· Reciprocal links once gone through the ageing process are still being counted, even with Google’s updated algorithm.
· Article writing and publishing will produce huge numbers of backlinks. You should be looking to produce upwards of 30 articles and aim for around 250.
· Attaching a weblog to your site which is updated daily will increase the rate at which the search engines visit your site and at the same time adds valuable content and links.
· Page Rank has still some importance in determining your position in the rankings because it is based on the links and the content of your site. However the page rank as given by the Google Toolbar is not necessarily accurate. A more accurate page rank can be gauged from using the detail supplied by the Google Sitemap statistics. Consequently generate a sitemap and submit it to Google.
The most important piece of advice is to design your site for the visitor and not the search engines. Have as much information within the content as possible and keep the graphics to a minimum.

SEO and Links Explained

Links – the official currency of SEO-land
In this article I often use the words credibility, authority, confidence, reputation, etc. I may be inconsistent with my use of words, but they all refer to the same thing - this abstract currency that flows among sites that link to each other.
When page A links to page B, page A gives page B a fraction of its authority. If page A has too many outgoing links, it will end up with little authority. Similarly, if page B has few links but receives many links, it will end up with a great deal of authority. Keep this concept in mind when you read the new few sections of this article.
Incoming Links
The value of an incoming link depends on:- The content of the linking page
- The link text
- The content immediately around the link
- The number of links on the page
- The position of the link within the content (header, footer, main body?)
- How well the content of the linking page compares to that of the target website
Incoming links cannot damage your rankings. SEs understand you can’t control who links to your website so you will not be penalized if you receive links from bad neighbourhoods. They will simply be of no benefit to you. The only problem is when you link to a bad neighbourhood (see external links below).
External Links
External links are an important aspect of quality content. It’s always good to offer a few links to related quality content. But beware of whom you link to. Incoming links cannot damage your reputation, but an outgoing link to a bad neighbourhood can very much do so.A link is a ‘vote of confidence’ to the page you’re linking to and you definitely do not want to give your precious votes to poor quality websites – quite simply – it makes you look bad.
Reciprocal Links
I’m well known to be sceptical when it comes to reciprocal links (probably because of this article ). One true, sincere incoming link is much more valuable than a thousand reciprocal links. If you read the ‘Incoming Links’ section above you’ll understand, but here’s why:Reciprocal links
- Link is usually on a page with poor or no content
- Links are normally considered poor quality because the content surrounding the link is unrelated
- Content of linking page is almost always unrelated
- Linking pages normally have dozens if not hundreds of external links
- Link pages normally have low PR because of the number of outgoing links
- Link is on a page of quality content
- Content is related to the link
- Content of linking page is related to your website
- Linking page with have a minimal amount of outgoing links, usually just yours.
- Article pages can only improve their PRs because they get traffic, they get bookmarked and linked to by people (used as reference).
So one-way links are a win-win situation. “Oh yeah? How the hell am I going to get incoming links genius-boy?”, you say. Fear not my friend, read on and you shall find the way…
